Brandon Jones and the No. 19 XYO Network team traveled to Pocono Raceway with a lot of momentum and ran a new race package for the NASCAR Xfinity Series. For the second consecutive weekend mother nature threatened thunderstorms over the race venue. The 19 XYO Network team had a fast Toyota Camry right off the hauler and ran top-10 in both practices on the Tricky Triangle. Jones followed that up with a sixth place qualifying position on the 2.5-mile raceway on Saturday morning.
The rains held off for the entire 100-laps of the Pocono Green 250. Jones started out strong and ran in the top-six for the entire Stage 1. He reported a tight condition throughout the run and advised he was running wide-open through turn 1 and it was bogging down. Crew chief Chris Gabehart decided to go for it and make a big swing during the first pit stop to loosen Jones up at the end of Stage 1. On lap 25 a few cars stayed out as the No. 19 XYO Network team pitted and packed their Camry full of fuel, changed four tires and made big wedge and air adjustments.
Jones restarted Stage 2 on lap 30 from the sixth position. On lap 31 Jones slipped back to ninth and advised he was still tight overall. On lap 47 Gabehart called Jones down pit road early to green flag pit for right-side tires only and raised the track bar up three rounds. The strategy was to save fuel and hope there would be more cautions and they would fall in the right sequence to put Jones in good track positions for the final laps.
The final stage went green on lap 55 and Jones started on the front row in second place. He snatched the lead on lap 56 and led five laps until he was passed on lap 63 by his teammate Kyle Busch who eventually won the race. Unfortunately, the cautions didn’t fall in favor of the XYO Network team and on lap 98 while Jones was in 12th place he started running out of fuel and had to pit for a splash of fuel. While on pit road he ran out and had to restart the engine. He was able to get back out on the track and when he crossed the start/finish line, he had posted a 24th place finish in his No 19 XYO Network Toyota Camry.
What happened out there?
“All in all, not a terrible day for us here. I know that’s not the finish at all that we wanted to see towards the end. Despite having the run out of fuel there and being a little bit off strategy I think at the end. I believe everything was supposed to play out correctly the way that Chris Gabehart was trying to work that out. I understand what he was doing. We just didn’t get that caution that we needed to get lined back up and come down pit road to get a splash of fuel again. I had a fast XYO Networks Toyota Camry all day. Hopefully we’ll take the momentum going into Michigan and be good there.”
