Post-Race Highlights

Brandon Jones and the No. 19 XYO Network team traveled to Dover for the 10th race of the 2018 season. They were running for the Dash 4 Cash and the $100,000 bonus on the one-mile concrete oval. They were fast right off the hauler and placed in the top-10 for both practices. NASCAR moved the start time up an hour for the 200-mile race, because of a threat of rain. Jones blistered off the fastest lap during qualifying and won his first pole with Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR). Jones led twice for 33 laps, ran in top-10 the majority of the race, bounced back from a speeding penalty on pit road and charged through the field from the rear keeping his streak alive and earning his fourth consecutive top-10 finish.

Jones started the OneMain Financial 200 at Dover International Speedway from the pole and led the first 22 laps. He reported a tight Camry and finished Stage 1 in third place. Jones reported that his XYO Network Toyota was tight and crew chief Chris Gabehart advised they would make the proper adjustments on their first stop. Jones brought it down pit road and took four tires, fuel and a wedge adjustment, but was penalized by NASCAR for speeding on pit road. Jones had to drop from third to 30th for the restart for Stage 2.

Jones restarted 30th on lap 52, but immediately started forging his way back through the field, picking off cars one by one. Gabehart advised Jones on lap 65 that he was the fastest car on the track as he busted back into the top-15. The fourth caution flag flew on lap 77 and Jones advised Gabehart he was still tight. Gabehart made a strategy call and told Jones to do the opposite of the leaders, which was to pit as they stayed out. Racing resumed on lap 84 and Jones restarted 19th. Stage 2 ended on lap 90, Gabehart’s strategy paid big dividends as the field pitted, and Jones stayed out and took over the lead for the second time. He led the next 11 laps, but was doubled teamed by the 1 and 7 car on lap 105 and dropped back to third.

Jones had dropped back as far as 12th but fought the 11 car over several laps until he passed it to take over the 10th place spot. When he crossed the start/finish line at Dover he finished 10th and captured his fourth consecutive top-10 finish.

How was your race?
“Well, not what we wanted. Positive note is we got the pole today. We kept it inside the top-10, so we kept that streak going at least. Brutal restarts all day – they were really tough to get going. The track would pick up all that rubber and so it was really hard for our car to start getting going, but once the rubber got laid down we were actually running top times – as fast, if not faster than the leader there – so all in all great day for our new sponsor, XYO Network. Great day for Toyota as well – we all had really good finishes here, so we’re just going to put that in the notebook. We’ve got some things to work on when we come back I think, but go to a mile and a half in a couple weeks here and be really good there.”
