Brandon Jones Starts In The Back, Races To Top-10 Finish In Iowa

NASCAR XFINITY Series – US Cellular 250
July 29, 2017 – Iowa Speedway
No. 33 JELD-WEN / Menards Chevrolet Camaro

Brandon Jones and the No. 33 JELD-WEN / Menards Chevrolet team finished 10th at Iowa Speedway on Saturday afternoon. After placing 12th in the first round of qualifying, Jones felt a tire going down while making a run in the second round. With a cut confirmed in the left front tire, the team was forced to start the event from the back of the field due to the tire change. Fighting the handling of his car throughout the early stages of the race, pit strategy during the race’s closing laps allowed Jones to move into the 10th position and secure his third top-10 finish of the 2017 season.

“That was a wild race for the No. 33 JELD-WEN / Menards Chevy team. We had to start from the back after changing our front left tire due to a cut we found in it during Round Two of qualifying. I really liked how we fired off though in Stage 1 for the race. I was able to move around enough to get up into the top-20 by the end of that stage. During Stage 2, I lost all rear grip and couldn’t roll through the corners like I wanted. It turned out that we had a bad blister that was causing our right rear tire to fall apart, but luckily that didn’t cause any damage. In the final stage, we pitted to go back on the previous adjustment to help free the car up, which helped our short run. Nick (Harrison, crew chief) made a great call to pit under caution with under 10 laps to go and put on a set of scuffed tires. That grip gave us the edge we needed to break into the top-10 before the checkered flag waved.”

Jones currently sits 17th in NASCAR XFINITY Series driver point standings. Next, the series will travel to Watkins Glen International on Saturday, August 5 for the Zippo 200 at The Glen, marking the series’ first road course competition of the season. NBCSN will carry a live broadcast of the event beginning at 2 p.m. ET, while radio coverage will be provided by MRN Radio and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, channel 90.
