NASCAR XFINITY Series – Sports Clips Haircuts VFW 200
September 2, 2017 – Darlington Raceway
No. 33 KCMG Chevrolet Camaro
Brandon Jones and the No. 33 KCMG Chevrolet team finished 23rd at Darlington Raceway on Saturday afternoon. With a fast Chevrolet when they unloaded, Jones led the field for the majority of final practice and ranked fifth by the session’s completion. By Saturday, the team had to work to dial-in the handling, as the rear-end stepped out and Jones tagged the wall in turns 1 and 2 during the first stage of qualifying. The KCMG team was able to repair their primary machine, but the incident resulted in Jones starting the race from the rear of the field. Working to dial-in the handling throughout the majority of the race, Jones ultimately crossed the finish line in the 23rd position.
“Darlington Raceway is always one of the most challenging tracks we visit, and today was no different. We had to fight right from the start of the day with our No. 33 KCMG Chevrolet after tagging the wall in the right rear during qualifying. The car just got away from me in Turns 1 and 2, so my team thrashed and repaired the damage before the start of the race. Even though we had to start in the rear, we fired off pretty well and made it into the top 20 before the end of Stage 1. I just needed more rear grip to get further through the field. Grip seemed to be what we lacked the most and chased throughout the race. At one point, it felt like the front of the car and the rear of the car were disconnected over the bumps, making it extremely hard to go into the turns with as much speed as I wanted. We kept working on it as much as possible during our pit stops and we hung onto a top-25 finish. I wish we had been able to get just a little bit more out of today, but we’ll take this and move on to Richmond next week.”
Jones currently sits 16th in NASCAR XFINITY Series driver point standings. Next, the series will travel to Richmond Raceway on Friday, September 8 for the Virginia529 College Savings 250. NBCSN will carry a live broadcast of the event beginning at 7:30 p.m. ET, while radio coverage will be provided by MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, channel 90.
